Before You Make Your First Call...

As you begin to contact agencies or organizations by phone, you will want to consider the following:

  • Throughout the conversation, try your best to make an impression as a person who is clear, concise and well-organized.
  • Ask to speak with the Volunteer Coordinator (or the person in charge).
  • Identify yourself by name and as a student at Immaculate Heart High School.
  • Explain that you are taking part in a community service program that requires you to fulfill [10 or 15] hours of service by Thursday, March 20, 2008.  [10 = Freshmen; 15 hours = Sophomores/Juniors/Seniors]
  • Make it clear that you have been advised to seek projects that put you into direct contact with those in need of service.
  • Be sure to mention that the adult who supervises you at this volunteer site will need to complete a short evaluation form/timecard at the end of your service.
  • Ask if there are any volunteer positions available.
    • If there are, ask for an interview appointment, and directions.
    • If there are not any openings, ask if there are any other agencies that they might recommend you contact.

When you go for the interview or orientation:

  • Dress neatly and arrive early.
  • Give the supervisor who will observe you at this volunteer site a copy of the IHHS Service Evaluation form and ask them to complete it at the end of your service.
    • (Often, as a courtesy, students first complete as much of this form as they can, filling out the top portion for the supervisor and directing their attention to the timecard, additional comments, and signature sections.)
  • Be sure that you have the correct answers to these very important questions:

    • What will I be doing as a volunteer here?
    • What are my working hours?
    • Do I need to wear special clothes?
    • What about parking and identification?
