Close Up Trip to Washington, D.C.

The Close Up program takes high school students to Washington, D.C., our nation's capital for a week of learning about the inner workings of our government. Students meet with elected officials, visit monuments and learn about real world experiences.
What happens on Close Up?
The 7-day program is led by Close Up staffers who guide students through the capital and stimulate dialogue examining American politics and history.

In addition to visiting monuments and museums, including Ford’s Theatre, Mount Vernon and the National Basilica, students engage in workshops exploring controversial domestic and foreign issues and have the chance to interact with students from all over the United States.

On Capitol Hill day, students sit in on Supreme Court oral arguments, visit the Capitol Building, and tour the Senate and House of Representatives. They also attend meetings at Congressional offices. The trip concludes with a farewell banquet and dance.

Why is the Close Up program more than just a “D.C. trip”?

Even if you have been to Washington, D.C. before, Close Up is a worthwhile experience. Close Up offers much more than a simple tour of the capital and entry to museums; it is an opportunity to gain real-world insight into the history and current politics of Washington, D.C. by turning the city into the classroom.

When is the trip?

The annual trip takes place toward the end of January and runs for a week. Students will miss several days of instruction, typically the first few days of second semester.

How do we get there, where do we stay and what do we eat?

We will fly directly from LAX to DC. Once in the city, students will be transported via charter bus or Metro. Students stay at a Marriott or comparable hotel, and meals are at the hotel or at restaurants throughout the city.

What is the total cost of the trip and how are payments collected?

The total cost of the trip is about $2,100. Registration remains open through each November and there is no limit to the number of juniors and seniors that can attend. To secure a spot, students need to submit a partial payment of $400. The remaining balance will be due by December 1 before departure. Payments are made through the Close Up website and the price includes airfare, hotel accommodations, meals, transportation and all entry fees to museums and attractions.  Additionally, a $100 check made payable to Immaculate Heart is due by December 1 and covers baggage fees and the cost of extra activities specific to Immaculate Heart.
